[MEME FUN] + [Looking to befriend other Chronically Ill / Disabled / Spoonie Beauty Bloggers!!]

[alternate post title: “I post various photos of my cosplay makeup and swear up and down that it’s relevant to the meme I’m filling out”]

So I went out in search of other spoonie beauty bloggers and ended up actually finding one (not sure if she’d be comfortable with me tagging her here, but regardless), which made me so happy!

She had a meme posted on the top of her blog, which I thought might be fun to fill out myself and post here, so you may all get to know me and my habits a bit better through a little harmless fun~

Also consider this an all call– if you know any chronically ill / disabled / spoonie beauty bloggers, send their urls my way, I’m so eager to make new friends with whom I have that in common~!

I myself am a spoonie w/ Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome III and its many friends (severe Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, etc!)

Now that we’ve got the melancholic sharing aspects out of the way, check out the fun makeup meme-ery below the cut~

☆〰☆〰☆

1. Do you remember your first makeup item?

Absolutely– brick red Revlon lipstick, to wear for Ballet recitals and solo performances. I found it in my ‘kiddie makeup bag’ from back in the 90’s just recently, and I think I might still own it??
I can’t believe how much bright makeup they put on me as a toddler-through-preteen, hahah.

2. Describe your perfect mascara. Have you found one that fits your specifications?

I don’t really care for mascara too much, but I really adore Benefit’s Tinted Lash Primer? Not really a mascara, but hear me out– black mascara (when not in cosplay/heavy makeup) looks far too heavy against my fair complexion, while brown mascara always looks odd and… overtly BROWN??
However, the tinted lash primer just kind of looks like a slight elongation and thickening of my real lashes, in a way that’s so natural and awesome. I wear it in one swipe sometimes even when presenting masculine, and can easily wear it without the bane of my existence, eyeliner.

3. What kind of coverage do you prefer from foundation?

sheer-medium or buildable. I’m used to BB creams, so it’s unfortunate that the best match for my skintone I’ve found so far in foundation is Kat Von D’s Lock It in 41, which could cover up the scene of a murder, my goodness…

4. Favorite high end brand?

oh geezy peets, that’s difficult. based on what I use most? Marc Jacobs, Benefit, MILK MAKEUP, Anastasia Beverly Hills

5. What cosmetic brands have you always wanted to try but still haven’t?

so, so many! Natasha Denona, Koh Gen Do, Burberry, Huda Beauty, Viseart, Charlotte Tilbury, Kevin Aucoin…. mostly things I can’t afford, you see…

6. Favorite drugstore brand?

hmmm, probably NYX Cosmetics!

7. Do you wear fake eyelashes?

Only for cosplay– I find they look off-balance with my face without circle lenses (and also don’t fit behind my glasses, usually), but then the combination of both needs a costume to go on top

[just a collage to note: I have worn many falsies. dates range from 2013-2017]

8. Is there any kind of makeup you can’t leave the house without?
Does sunscreen count? Well no, but the answer is also no, I can and most often do leave the house with no makeup on– but I’m ALWAYS wearing some form of SPF 50+ PA++++ UV protection~

9. What is your most cherished beauty product?
I take extra care of my makeup palettes (ABH Modern Renaissance), ABH Moonchild atm), if that has anything to do with the question, but I’m a huge fan of highlighters, esp cream/liquid ones ଘ(੭ˊ ꒳ˋ)੭✧*

10. How often do you shop for makeup? Do you like to pick up an item here and there or get lots of goodies at once?
I probably buy some type of makeup item (be it a quality brand name from Sephora, or a $5 lip tint in an asian beauty haul, etc) at least once every month or two….. and that’s being optimistic/kind to myself, tbh. I usually attempt to go in for one thing, and end up with a delightfully large–but painfully expensive– haul.

11. Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?
I TRY to budget, but honestly in life, I’m just kind of an impulsive, spendy person in general, when it comes to money….

12. Do you utilize coupons, rewards cards and sales when you shop for cosmetics?
Absolutely! God, I wish Ulta had a better product selection, or that they could swap rewards programs with Sephora, because that would be a dream come true of sorts for me. _(:3」∠)_
But when the 15% VIB Sales go down…. my wallet weeps. it truly does.

13. What type of product do you buy the most of?
strictly in terms of MAKEUP and not skincare: highlighters, white-mixers to try with foundations, korean lip tints. lots of those tints bby.

14. Is there a brand that you absolutely can’t stand?
when I think of Sephora, I’ve never been drawn particularly to the displays for Clinique, Make Up Forever, Bare Minerals, etc. Also, I’m still quite honestly a tad salty about the whole Lime Crime fiasco from so long ago, hahah!

15. Do you avoid certain ingredients in cosmetics like parabens or sulfates?
In skincare, I try to go for products with fewer silicones/-cones in general as main ingredients, when I can afford to do so. Otherwise, most things are fair game with me~

16. Do you have a favorite place to shop for makeup?
In person? Sephora. Online? Mostly eBay, for asian makeup products!!

17. Do you like trying new skincare products or do you keep a certain routine?
oh my god, don’t even get me started– (the former, obviously!!)

18. Favorite bath and body brand?
I enjoy the Korean brand Happy Bath, as well as my lotion from another korean brand, Illi (subsidiary of AmorePacific), and this natural moisturizing body oil I got from Sephora by a brand called from Herbivore Botanicals that’s AMAZING~

19. If you could only buy from one brand, which brand would you choose?
………….I chose to assert my fifth amendment rights.

20. What brand do you think has the best packaging?
For Asian brands, I love Peripera’s packaging (cute, but functional and with effective products inside!) and for western, they did a pretty nice job with sleek packaging on Rihanna’s new Fenty line~

21. Which celebrity always has great makeup?
Emma Stone and Lupita Nyong’o. but they’re both also just downright gorgeous.

22. Do you belong to any online makeup communities?
r/asianbeauty and r/makeupaddiction! (mostly the former, the latter intimidates me slightly!!)

23. Favorite Beauty Gurus
I don’t really watch any (I have a hard time relating to most, as I have extremely fair skin and a minimalist taste/style in makeup) but a friend linked me to NikkieTutorials recently and she was pretty neat– looked really huggable for some reason, hahah

24. Do you like multi-functional products like lip and cheek stains?
I love love LOVE lip and cheek stains– but I rarely utilize one product for dual purpose usage?? (I own Canmake Cheek/Lip Stain, but use it on my cheeks only, and I own lip stains with doe-foot applicators that advertise as being useable as cheek stains, but I use them exclusively on my lips due to the packaging??)

25. Are you clumsy in putting on makeup?
oh, extremely. putting on heavy eyeliner (usually for cosplay) is a trial error process similar to how I sketch when I draw digitally, where I erase my mistakes with an oil balm pen + a fine-tip  q-tip to refine the shape of the liner, and repeatedly correct my mistakes. I suppose you could say I’m still learning in that regard, hahah

26. Do you use makeup base/primer for the eyes?
I forget sometimes, but I have some Urban Decay eyeshadow primer (a travel size one, so old it’s still in squeeze-tube format) that I try to remember to slather on before I know I’m having a long or important day

27. How many hair products do you use on a typical day?
Aside from my Kose Rose of Heaven Shampoo + Conditioner? One: Mise En Scene Perfect Repair Serum Light. I put about a pump (sometimes a pump and a half– I missed my haircut last month and now my hair is breaching ear-length) on my fingertips, warm it up/spread around my fingers, and work into my towel-dried, brushed-flat hair. Makes my hair very soft and easy to work with~

28. What do you apply first, concealer or foundation?
I’m still trying to figure out which works best for me– I’ve never strugled with acne until recent months (random onset adult acne?? hurray :T) so I’m not sure how to conceal it best.

29. Do you ever consider taking makeup classes?
It could be fun, I suppose?

30. What do you love about makeup?

splitcos[the differences you can make with makeup! character on left is supposed to be a young boy, haha]

My honest favorite thing about makeup isn’t ‘enhancing my best features’ like most people would say– it’s wearing cosplay makeup, and using makeup to turn myself into a character I love, or become something I’m not. But that’s just in regards to myself.
I also love how makeup can provide a confidence boost to others who may need one, or make them feel more confident and beautiful in who they are!
Anybody who tries to trash someone for ‘hiding behind makeup’ can be prepared for a swift kick in the shin from yours truly– and probably a shout of pain, as the kick hurts my fragile body more than it even hurts you. But hopefully I’d get my point across.

    • Thanks so much, hahah!
It makes me happy that you think the cosplay is an interesting hobby– a lot of people outside the nerd world can be judgmental about it, so that’s really cool that you can see the fun I have with it!
(One thing a lot of people don’t know about cosplay other than making costumes and dressing up– we do glamorous, silly, fun photoshoots! It’s one of my favorite aspects, really, and it makes me feel so special to have photographers and friends/assistants treat me like a star and the center of attention for 30mins to an hour or so, hah! All focus is on how to make me look the best I can, and having fun, it’s just a wonderful experience– here’s just a few of my favorite photos from photoshoots that I’ve done in the last 2 years~)
And thanks SO much for the recommendations/introductions! I’ll check them out right away!!

      • Those pictures are great! I enjoyed seeing them, thank you for sharing with me! 🙂 I don’t consider myself to be a judgemental person at all. I’m pretty easy going, and I think that looks like so much fun!

  1. Hi, I’ve also got EDS Type iii, CFS and Fibromyalgia along with osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, facet joint arthritis; skin & gastric problems – to name but a few. I’m up for being friends if you’re interested in befriending people in England with some of the same health issues. Trix
