Let me be completely upfront about this: this cream is one of my absolute favorite skincare products of the moment. Among the holiest of grails. One of the HGs to end all HGs.
Initially, I actually learned about this specific item through noticing a lot of people raving it, among other creams and products from Dr. Jart+’s Ceramidin product line, over on– where else,– r/asianbeauty, then decided to buy it after being ‘talked into it’ on this “Talk Me Into/Out Of” thread I started this spring– both on a whim, and out of curiosity as to whether other people thought the product was worth the hefty $45 price tag.
Well, as I said, I left that thread feeling pretty darn convinced, proceeded to order the cream from Amazon Prime, and all I can say was…. heckin geez, I was not disappointed, not even in the slightest.
If you’re in the market for a cream that feels soothing on your skin, is restorative and nourishing (without feeling heavy at all), has a buttery smooth texture, and can easily be layered for extra moisture, I’d recommend following the cut to find out more, because honestly I can’t say enough good things about this magic in a jar, hahah~
⋆Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Gel-Cream⋆
Very average tub packaging– not very hygienic, does not include a spatula if I recall correctly– but with the positive aspect that the lid screws on very securely. I could throw this tub at the wall and it might not even pop open tbh (though I would never do that, because this cream is precious and should be loved.)
When you first open the tub of your Ceramidin Gel-Cream, odds are your reaction may be similar to how mine was: “Is this product spoiled?”; “Is it supposed to look like chunky cottage cheese?” And the answer is yes. Yes it is. But don’t worry about the little ball-shaped chunks– they’re not solid microbeads, or even the kind that pop easily in your hands, like those found in the Innisfree Green Tea Sleeping Pack *. They melt perfectly onto your fingertips or the palms of your hands, as if they were never there, and meld perfectly with the texture of the rest of the cream, which I can’t think of any better word to describe than simply: buttery!
Not to mention, the buttery, super smooth texture absorbs so fast, that sometimes, by the time I’m finished spreading the cream all across my face, it’s already absorbed enough in some places that I don’t have to pat it in. And if feels somewhat cooling and soothing on your skin, without having an intentionally icy aloe-vera or menthol feel to it.
Though the chunks (supposedly ‘ceramides’, according to the brand’s description) seem aesthetically unpleasing, they melt away with a very simple, gentle rub between your fingertips– or, if you’re like me and you decant some of your beloved tub products into airless pump bottles (yes, this product is compatible with pump bottles, the ‘chunks’ are soft enough that they don’t clog pumps/nozzles, etc) — the ‘chunks’ are squeezed away when they come out the nozzle, so I don’t even see them anymore at all~
Generally, though, this cream has an almost exactly ideal texture that lasts me through spring, summer, and likely fall and winter (given my climate that averages a yearly, dry 60°F/15°C – 100°F/37°C ; not a huge variation in temperature or extreme weather here in California!)
This product is moderately perfumed– smelling exactly like the rest of the ceramidin line, at least those which I’ve tried/used– and while I don’t necessarily dislike the smell or feel put off from the product by it, it’s not something I’d personally consider ‘aromatic’ in any way. My mother and a friend both remarked on separate occasions that it smelled great, though I would go as far as to agree with that.
Regardless, the smell fades very quickly from both my hands and my face, so anybody who is put off by it doesn’t have to worry about a bad smell lingering on their body for long.
When I first received this product in the mail, I was recovering from what I’ve come to call a ‘tretinoin overdose’, where I’d somehow either used to high a dose of tret in too large an amount, or cross contaminated the gel to parts of my face where I didn’t normally use it/it didn’t belong– I don’t remember which, at this point, but that’s happened to me more times than I’d like to admit, and the results are always the same: bumpy, ruddy texture, inflammation, extreme sensitivity, and profusely dry skin.
It’s hard to use any product when you wake up and suddenly realize you dun’ goofed that badly, because just about everything heckin’ stings on contact with your skin. But then, unintentionally, this little tub of soothing ceramides and happiness arrived coinciding with my tret OD, and what do you know, it doesn’t sting to apply. I practically bathed in layers of this stuff for a week, and my skin seemed to bounce back exponentially faster than every other (embarrassingly long list of) times I’d over-tret’d my face.
As far as moisturizers go, I like mine light– so this falls under the category of a ‘medium’ moisturizer, among my collection– but I use it any time I feel I need an extra boost of moisture or soothing.
To be honest, I’m almost hesitant to give any product 5 solid stars overall– it seems almost unrealistic and exaggerated in my opinion– but looking at my skincare collection and the products I regularly use, if I had to give a ★★★★★ to anything, it would be this product right here.
The texture– in spite of being downright aesthetically confusing– is so, so lovely, and it a delightfully effective, soothing, repairing moisturizer for times when your skin needs a little TLC, or just regular everyday use, like I often do.
[repurchase: yes x ∞]
I hope somebody out there found this review helpful in some way– I sure know I put a lot of heart and hard work into writing it, as always. And also as always, thanks to anyone and everyone who took the time to read this post. It means the world to me!!
